This publication explores the historical role of embroidery and
textile arts in the oppression of women, as well as how contemporary
feminist artists have reclaimed these practices as tools for
empowerment and resistance.
Originally developed from my dissertation, the book delves into
how needlework was historically linked to domesticity and control,
reinforcing gender roles and limiting women’s autonomy. It also
highlights the subversive power of stitching, showcasing artists
who use it to challenge societal norms, tell personal stories, and
reclaim
agency.
