Needlework
Care, 2024
‘Care’ stitches together childhood memories, including writings,
drawings, clothing and bedding into a quilt that reflects on the
complexities of caregiving at a young age. Drawing upon the rich
symbolism inherent in needlework,
quilting becomes a tool to
navigate the diverse experiences of having a sister with Down
syndrome. This quilt embraces nostalgic childhood elements to
celebrate my sister, instilling the essence of hope and understanding.
Beyond personal reflection, ‘Care’ extends as a call for greater support
and acknowledgement of caregivers whilst also advocating against the
discrimination of individuals with special needs. Stitched in the border
are all the institutions and individuals who have helped Lana,
emphasising the collective effort needed to champion inclusivity and
compassion.
